The Potsdam Conference and Exclusive Residential Villa Area

10.30 am
This time our tour takes us to Babelsberg, the largest and most well-known of Potsdam’s suburbs.

This is where Truman, Stalin and Churchill stayed in the summer of 1945 at the time of the Potsdam Conference.

Renowned architects, such as Mies van der Rohe who also designed the National Gallery in Berlin, played a part in the design here.

We come across names such as Peter Behrens, Konrad Adenauer, Max Schmehling, Josef Göbbels and Konrad Wolf.

The history of the exclusive residential villa area is closely linked to Babelsberg as a media town. All the great Ufa and Defa stars were filmed in Babelsberg: Heinz Rühmann, Hans Albers, Brigitte Horney, Hildegard Knef and Marlene Dietrich. The tour explores the history of film from the time of silent movies right through to the present day. After the tour we know where the Stasi was, where the stars and other stars-to-be lived and where Stalin lived in the street formerly known as Karl Marx Strasse.

Approx. 12.30 pm
Lunch at the Wiener Café, Luisenplatz

Approx. 2.00 pm
Tour of Cecilienhof Castle.
This building is the last of the Hohenzollern castles which was built as the summer seat of the Crown Prince in English country-house style. The many architechtural frivolities and luxurious vegetation contribute to the country house character.

In 1945 the Potsdam Agreement was finalised here between Truman, Attlee and Stalin, including the details of how Germany was to be divided.

The wonderful park invites you to walk through the New Garden with its superb marble palace situated on the banks of the Heiligen See lake. From here there is a fabulous view of the Potsdam Havel river landscape right across to Pfaueninsel island, and this unique atmosphere can still be enjoyed today in the extensive gardens as well.

Opposite this, in the suburbs of Berlin between the Heiligen and Tiefen See lakes, which we will now travel through, we have a view of the big houses and impressive villas of famous people such as Jauch, Joop and others.

Although this part of town is typically inhabited by many prominent people such as fashion designers, models, diplomats and tv models, the villas of former actors are also found in Babelsberg.
